Sugar Free Modak Recipe: A novel and healthy method of making rice flour dumplings or modak with dates, nuts, and khoya During the Ganapati festival, or Ganesha Chaturthi, the main offerings for Lord Ganesha are sweet dumplings.

Bhagwan Ganesha’s favourite sweet is modak. During Ganesh Chaturthi, many different types of modak are prepared. The most well-known Maharashtrian modak, however, is steamed modak or ukadiche modak made from rice flour.

One of our favourite Indian festivals is Ganesh Chaturthi. We used to go to the various Ganesha pandals in our area until last year. But I don’t think it’ll be possible this year.

During the 10-day Ganesh festival, my parents would take us to the various Ganesh pandals in South Mumbai.

Every year, we would go to my mother’s friend’s house in Girgaum, Mumbai. We could see the magnificent processions on the last Visarjan day from her house.

We would also have a large pandal in our neighbourhood. We would also participate in the Ganesh aarti in the morning and evening.

I grew up witnessing the positive energy and celebration that occurs during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Many Indian states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, and Gujarat, observe Ganesh Chaturthi with equal zeal and devotion.

The recipes prepared during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival differ from state to state. Modak or Kozhukattai, one of Bhagwan Ganesha’s favourite foods, is prepared differently, and sundals prepared in South India are not made in Maharashtra.

The Ganesha festival is known as Pillayar Chaturthi, Vinayagar Chaturthi, or Vinayaka Chavithi in South India.

Modak recipes are very popular Lord Ganesha offerings and are typically made during the Chauthi festival. It can be made with a variety of fillings such as chocolate, sugar, jaggery, and even mawa and milk powder. However, this is a one-of-a-kind no sugar modak recipe made with nut and date stuffing, making it a healthy modak recipe.

I’ve been posting a type of modak recipe every year, and this year I decided to post something different and healthy. I posted the traditional ukadiche modak recipe without a shaper or mould last year. In fact, I demonstrated both methods with a mould and by hand pleating in this post. I find that while using a shaper or mould is simple and quick, it does not provide the same level of satisfaction and content that handmade modak does. However, the mould modaks are very attractive, symmetrical, and presentable. As a result, if you intend to share it with friends and family, I recommend using the mould modak recipe.

In addition, some tips and suggestions for making sugar-free modak. To begin with, this is a no sugar and no jaggery modak, but that does not mean it is devoid of sugar. I’ve added dates and khoya, both of which contain sugar, so you may want to reconsider if you have sugar issues. Second, the amount of stuffing can be easily adjusted and stuffed to your liking. Also, if using a mould or shaper, apply a thin layer of rice dough first, followed by the stuffing. Finally, if stored in a dry container, these steamed modak can last for 3-5 days. You can also chill it and then microwave it for 20-30 seconds before serving.

Modak is a delicious Indian dumpling. It is a traditional sweet that is usually made during the Ganesh Chathurthi celebrations. It is known by various names in different parts of India. Modaka is the name given to it in Karnataka. Modak is prepared differently in different parts of the country. The outer dough can be made with wheat flour, semolina, or rice flour. The inner stuffing can also be of various types. This is a sugar-free and jaggery-free modak recipe.

Ingredients
  

As stuffing:c

  • 2 tsp  ghee / clarified butter
  • 2 tbsp  cashew / kaju   (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp almonds / badam   (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp  raisins / kishmish
  • 1 tsp  poppy seeds / kush khus
  • 1/2 cup  dates / khajoor   (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 cup  milk
  • 1/2 cup  milk powder   (full cream)
  • 1/4 cup  coconut   (grated)
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder

For the dough:

Step-by-step instructions for making sugar-free modak:

    Stuffing with dried fruit and khova:

    • First, heat 1/2 tsp ghee in a tawa and toast 2 tbsp cashew, 2 tbsp almonds, and 2 tbsp raisins.
    • Roast the dry fruits until golden brown.
    • Now add 1 tsp poppy seeds and toast thoroughly.
    • Add 1/2 cup dates and mix well.
    • Cook until the mixture is well combined. set aside
    • 1 tsp ghee and 1/4 cup milk, heated in a large kadai
    • Stir thoroughly to ensure that the ghee and milk are well combined.
    • 1/2 cup full cream milk powder is now added.
    • Stir continuously while keeping the flame low.
    • The liquid begins to thicken.
    • The mixture begins to separate from the pan after 8 minutes.
    • Continue to mix until a lump forms; instant khoya is ready.
    • 1/4 cup coconut, well combined
    • Now stir in the roasted dry fruits and 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
    • Mix and mash until everything is well combined.
    • Finally, the dry fruit stuffing for modak is complete. set aside

    Recipe for modak preparation:

    • First, heat 1¼  cup water, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon ghee in a large kadai.
    • Bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
    • Continue to cook on low heat while adding 1 cup fine rice flour.
    • Combine the flour and water thoroughly. Do not be concerned if the dough is dry.
    • Turn off the heat, cover, and set aside for 3-5 minutes.
    • Place the rice flour mixture in a large mixing bowl.
    • Knead the flour with your hands to form a smooth and soft dough while it is still hot.
    • In addition, pinch a small lemon-sized ball and flatten it.
    • Begin pressing the edges and creating a dent in the centre with both thumbs.
    • slowly press from the edges to form a cup.
    • Begin making pleats with your index and thumb.
    • Scoop in a tbsp of the prepared dry fruit stuffing.
    • Assemble the pleats into a bundle.
    • Close the top by pinching and pointing it. Modak is finished and ready to steam.
    • To prepare modak using the mould, grease it with ghee.
    • Stuff a ball of dough in the centre and press it against the mould's walls.
    • Make a hole in the centre for the stuffing.
    • Now stuff with a tbsp stuffing and press tightly.
    • A small piece of dough to seal it.
    • Slowly remove the modak from the mould.
    • Place the modak in the steamer, leaving gaps between them.
    • Cover and steam the modak for 10 minutes, or until they have a shiny texture.
    • Finally, celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi by offering no sugar – no jaggery modak to Lord Ganesha.

    Notes:

    • First, knead the dough thoroughly, adding ghee as needed, until it forms a smooth dough.
    • Also, don’t be concerned if the modaks break while you’re pressing and making a cup. Knead well with hot water and ghee.
    • Alter the stuffing to your liking; you can also use store-bought khova instead of making it from scratch.
    • Finally, before you begin preparing the no sugar, no jaggery modak, wash your hands with water.
