Coconut Barfi Recipe: Coconut Barfi, also known as Nariyal Barfi, is a soft and delicious barfi or fudge made with freshly grated coconut and sugar. Simple and delicious Indian fudge recipe made primarily with grated coconut, sugar, and milk. It is a popular Indian dessert recipe served during the festivals of Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandan, and Navratri. It can also be made with condensed milk and desiccated coconut, but this recipe sticks to the original.

South Indian cuisine includes many traditional sweets and dessert recipes that are popular during festivals and celebrations. Coconut burfi is one such simple sweet recipe that requires few ingredients but yields a fantastic result.

The simplicity and flavour of this coconut burfi recipe. I used to only help her by grating fresh coconut and standing next to her while she cooked. However, things have changed dramatically since then. Without a doubt, I adapted her recipe, but I went a step further. In place of freshly grated coconut, this recipe uses desiccated coconut and warm milk. Adding warm milk helps to keep the moisture in the coconut fudge and is a quick substitute for fresh coconut.

The coconut burfi recipe is simple to make, but there are some tips, suggestions, and recommendations for it. First and foremost, because I didn’t have fresh coconut, I used desiccated coconut. If you do, I would always recommend that you use it first. Also, even if you’re using fresh milk, you can use warm milk as well. Second, I did not use any dry fruits in this recipe and strictly adhered to the traditional recipe. However, while shaping it, you can top it with chopped cashews, almonds, and walnuts. Finally, if stored in a dry air container, the recipe can easily last for weeks.

Coconut Barfi Recipe

Coconut Burfi, a delectable Indian dessert also known as Kopra Paak. Coconut Burfi is a classic and traditional Indian sweet that is made for festivals and special occasions. Coconut and celebrations go hand in hand because the sweets made from it are auspicious and are used as offerings at sacred rituals held during festivals.

  • 3 cups coconut (grated)
  • 2 cups  sugar
  • 1/2 cup  milk
  • 2 tbsp cream  (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp  cardamom powder / elachi powder


  • To begin, place 3 cup freshly grated coconut in a large kadai.
  • 2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup milk
  • Mix well over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Continue to stir until the mixture begins to thicken. (approximately 10 minutes)
  • Now stir in 2 tbsp cream.
  • Continue to cook on a medium heat, stirring constantly.
  • After 20 minutes, the mixture begins to thicken.
  • After 25 minutes, the coconut mixture will begin to separate from the pan.
  • Continue cooking until the mixture begins to hold its shape.
  • Now stir in 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder.
  • Place the prepared dough on a greased baking sheet lined with baking paper.

  • Allow to set for 10 minutes, or until completely set but still warm.
  • Unmould and cut into pieces now.
  • Finally, serve coconut burfi / nariyal barfi immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

  • To begin, for a more juicy coconut barfi, use freshly grated coconut. It can, however, also be made with frozen or desiccated coconut.
